Tornado Watch Until 9PM

Greetings from vacation...

A TORNADO WATCH was just issued for western parts of Mississippi until 9PM tonight. The watch means conditions are favorable for the development of severe storms that could produce tornadoes. See the graphic below to view the areas in the watch.

You can see on the radar imagery from the above map, that storms are already firing up in Louisiana. You can see this quite nicely on the latest visible satellite image as well. See below.

Thick clouds have held temperatures down in the Jackson metro area...but south/southwest Mississippi has warmed into the 70s...see below.

Like I mentioned on Sunday, the wind dynamics with the system are impressive. We have some good wind shear (change in wind direction as you go through the atmosphere) in place. The clouds may keep the severe threat isolated, but things could go down hill if the sun is able to break through and heat things up a little more.

The bottom line is you need to be ready should warnings get issued for your area. Remember, warnings are when you need to take action and seek shelter in a basement, interior closet, etc. If you have a weather radio, make sure it is plugged in and working.

I'll be watching the situation unfold and will do my best to tweet out information as things develop. You can follow me on Twitter @EricLawWLBT. WLBT's Chief Meteorologist Barbie Bassett will be cutting in as necessary this evening. She'll also have the very latest coming up today at 4pm. I'll be monitoring the blog and Twitter for questions.
